The idea for this workshop came from Lucy Steel, 23, employed with YogaTherapies as a yoga teacher. She met Tom Webb before, the owner of local company Estate Tea, and found that both yoga and tea are strongly welcomed by people during their conversation.

“It is generally believed that people can get health benefits from yoga and tea. And I think even mentally, taking time to make tea is mindful, and yoga is mindful movement as well”, said Lucy. “Yoga tea ceremony combines yoga and tea nicely. Tom and I just want to give it a go and see how it goes.”

This workshop lasted 90 minutes, and it started with a cup of tea brewed by Tom while Lucy guided practicers through pranayama and meditation, leading into a slow flow. Pausing half way through, people brewed their own tea in a small group. Then easing back into movement opening the heart in a restorative practice followed by another tea to release blockages in the body and heal.

This novel workshop was well accepted by practicers. As a practicer said: “This is my first try of yoga tea ceremony. Tea sipping during yoga practice helps me relax physically and mentally. And today is also the first time I tasted 3 kinds of Chinese tea, which made me experience a different culture.”

According to Libby Howe, 26, the reception of “YogaTherapies – Yoga &Wellbeing Studios”, they organize different kinds of yoga workshops regularly, but this is the first time that a yoga tea ceremony has been held. Although the number of participants this time was not large, everyone had good feedback, and the studio will consider holding it with tea companies continually in the future.

In fact, not only combined with tea, various yoga-related activities are getting more popular in Newcastle. Different yoga studios are actively innovating to provide practicers with richer contents in order to attract more customers.
